Music in Guatemala Schools

Todd and three girls from Bella Vista, Coban, Guatemala.

Todd lives in Guatemala City most of the year (he still spends a couple months in Minnesota each year).  He teaches music in schools and churches in Guatemala City and surrounding communities.  Music education here is almost non-existent, but music is a passion with the people.

EL MIRADOR (Colegio Luterano Agustino de Guatemala)

The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at El Mirador in Boca Del Monte

El Mirador School is in Guatemala City.  It has about 65 students in grades K-6.  Todd has visited El Mirador School many times from 2010 to the present.  He has brought letters and videos from Bridgewater Elementary School and ARTech Charter School both in Northfield, MN to the students there.  The students there love to sing!

Goals at El Mirador are: bring musical instruments (small teaching marimbas would be great!), provide a written and recorded curriculum for the school.

LIFE SCHOOL in Panajachel

This is the most recent new school for Todd’s teaching.  This is an English school on Lake Atitlan in Sololá.  This past year (March-May 2013) he taught pre-school through 9th grade once a week for 12 weeks.

Mundo Alegre is a pre-K – grade 9 private school in Villa Hermosa, a suburb of Guatemala City.  Todd has been there a number of times to sing with the 1st graders and the middle school aged students.  The middle school students have exchanged letters with the ARTech students in Northfield, MN.

La Limonada is a supplimental school program in one of the most impoverished areas of Guatemala City.  Todd was at the school for two days in 2010 to sing with the kids ages pre-K to grade 9 and share with some of the families of the neighborhood.
